Black Body: Rereading James Baldwin’s “Stranger in the Village” Then the bus began driving into clouds, and between one cloud and case interviews the next we caught glimpses of the town below. It was suppertime and the town was a constellation of statements yellow points. Study Interviews? We arrived thirty minutes after leaving that town, which was called Leuk. The train to Leuk had come in from Visp, the sur avoir de soi est ce, train from case study interviews Visp had come from Bern, and the train before that was from Zurich, from which I had started out in discursivity kant, the afternoon. Three trains, a bus, and a short stroll, all of it through beautiful country, and case then we reached Leukerbad in coursework, darkness. So Leukerbad, not far in case study interviews, terms of absolute distance, was not all that easy to get to. August 2, 2014: it was James Baldwin’s birthday.
Were he alive, he would be turning ninety. He is one of those people just on the pythagorean answers, the cusp of escaping the contemporary and slipping into the historical—John Coltrane would have turned eighty-eight this year; Martin Luther King, Jr., would have turned eighty-five—people who could still be with us but who feel, at times, very far away, as though they lived centuries ago. James Baldwin left Paris and came to study Leukerbad for the first time in 1951. Coursework? His lover Lucien Happersberger’s family had a chalet in a village up in the mountains. Case Study Interviews? And so Baldwin, who was depressed and distracted at the time, went, and the village (which is also called Loeche-les-Bains) proved to be a refuge for him. His first trip was in the summer, and lasted two weeks.
Then he returned, to his own surprise, for two more winters. His first novel, “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” found its final form here. He had struggled with the book for eight years, and the pythagorean he finally finished it in this unlikely retreat. He wrote something else, too, an essay called “Stranger in case interviews, the Village”; it was this essay, even more than the coursework, novel, that brought me to Leukerbad. “Stranger in study, the Village” first appeared in thesis kant, Harper’s Magazine in 1953, and then in the essay collection “Notes of a Native Son,” in 1955. It recounts the experience of being black in an all-white village. It begins with a sense of an extreme journey, like Charles Darwin’s in the Galapagos or Tete-Michel Kpomassie’s in Greenland. But then it opens out into study, other concerns and into a different voice, swivelling to look at the American racial situation in the nineteen-fifties.
The part of the essay that focusses on the Swiss village is both bemused and sorrowful. And Theatre Studies A Level? Baldwin is alert to the absurdity of case being a writer from New York who is considered in some way inferior by Swiss villagers, many of whom have never travelled. But, later in the essay, when he writes about race in America, he is not at drama and theatre studies, all bemused. He is angry and prophetic, writing with a hard clarity and interviews carried along by a precipitous eloquence. I took a room at discursivity kant, the Hotel Mercure Bristol the night I arrived. I opened the windows to a dark view, but I knew that in the darkness loomed the Daubenhorn mountain. Study? I ran a hot bath and essay when to use lay neck-deep in the water with my old paperback copy of “Notes of case a Native Son.” The tinny sound from my laptop was Bessie Smith singing “I’m Wild About That Thing,” a filthy blues number and essay to use a masterpiece of plausible deniability: “Don’t hold it baby when I cry / Give me every bit of it, else I’d die / I’m wild about that thing.” She could be singing about a trombone. And it was there in the bath, with his words and case interviews her voice, that I had my body-double moment: here I was in Leukerbad, with Bessie Smith singing across the years from 1929; and I am black like him; and I am slender; and have a gap in my front teeth; and am not especially tall (no, write it: short); and am cool on ap world statements, the page and animated in study interviews, person, except when it is the other way around; and I was once a fervid teen-age preacher (Baldwin: “Nothing that has happened to me since equals the power and the glory that I sometimes felt when, in the middle of a sermon, I knew that I was somehow, by some miracle, really carrying, as they said, ‘the Word’—when the gcse coursework remark, church and study interviews I were one”); and I, too, left the church; and I call New York home even when not living there; and feel myself in all places, from New York City to theorem assignment rural Switzerland, the custodian of a black body, and have to find the language for case interviews, all of what that means to me and to the pythagorean theorem the people who look at me. The ancestor had briefly taken possession of the descendant. Case Study Interviews? It was a moment of identification, and in the days that followed that moment was a guide. “From all available evidence no black man had ever set foot in this tiny Swiss village before I came,” Baldwin wrote.
But the village has grown considerably since his visits, more than sixty years ago. They’ve seen blacks now; I wasn’t a remarkable sight. There were a few glances at the hotel when I was checking in, and in the fine restaurant just up the road, but there are always glances. Assignment? There are glances in Zurich, where I am spending the case, summer, and there are glances in New York City, which has been my home for fourteen years. There are glances all over Europe and in India, and anywhere I go outside Africa. The test is how long the glances last, whether they become stares, with what intent they occur, whether they contain any degree of hostility or mockery, and to what extent connections, money, or mode of statements dress shield me in these situations.
To be a stranger is to be looked at, but to be black is to be looked at especially. (“The children shout Neger! Neger! as I walk along the streets.”) Leukerbad has changed, but in case study, which way? There were, in fact, no bands of children on the street, and and theatre few children anywhere at all. Presumably the children of Leukerbad, like children the world over, were indoors, frowning over computer games, checking Facebook, or watching music videos. Perhaps some of the interviews, older folks I saw in thesis kant, the streets were once the very children who had been so surprised by the sight of study Baldwin, and about whom, in the essay, he struggles to take a reasonable tone: “In all of this, in which it must be conceded that there was the charm of dissertation conscience est ce se connaitre genuine wonder and in study interviews, which there was certainly no element of intentional unkindness, there was yet no suggestion that I was human: I was simply a living wonder.” But now the children or grandchildren of those children are connected to the world in a different way. Maybe some xenophobia or racism are part of their lives, but part of their lives, too, are Beyonce, Drake, and Meek Mill, the music I hear pulsing from Swiss clubs on Friday nights. Baldwin had to bring his records with him in the fifties, like a secret stash of medicine, and essay test when to use it he had to haul his phonograph up to Leukerbad, so that the sound of the American blues could keep him connected to a Harlem of the spirit. I listened to some of the same music while I was there, as a way of case interviews being with him: Bessie Smith singing “I Need A Little Sugar In My Bowl” (“I need a little sugar in my bowl / I need a little hot dog on my roll”), Fats Waller singing “Your Feet’s Too Big.” I listened to thesis my own playlist as well: Bettye Swann, Billie Holiday, Jean Wells, “Coltrane Plays the Blues,” the Physics, Childish Gambino. The music you travel with helps you to create your own internal weather.
But the world participates, too: when I sat down to study interviews lunch at theorem assignment, the Romerhof restaurant one afternoon—that day, all the customers and staff were white—the music playing overhead was Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” History is now and black America. Photograph by Teju Cole. At dinner, at a pizzeria, there were glances. A table of British tourists stared at me. But the waitress was part black, and at the hotel one of the staff members at the spa was an older black man. “People are trapped in history, and history is trapped in them,” Baldwin wrote. But it is also true that the little pieces of history move around at case interviews, a tremendous speed, settling with a not-always-clear logic, and rarely settling for long. And perhaps more interesting than my not being the only black person in the village is the plain fact that many of the other people I saw were also foreigners.
This was the biggest change of all. Gcse Remark? If, back then, the village had a pious and convalescent air about it, the feel of “a lesser Lourdes,” it is much busier now, packed with visitors from other parts of case study Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, and all over Europe, Asia, and the Americas. It has become the most popular thermal resort in the Alps. The municipal baths were full. There are hotels on every street, at every price point, and there are restaurants and the pythagorean theorem answers luxury-goods shops. If you wish to buy an eye-wateringly costly watch at forty-six hundred feet above sea level, it is now possible to do so. The better hotels have their own thermal pools.
At the Hotel Mercure Bristol, I took an elevator down to the spa and sat in the dry sauna. A few minutes later, I slipped into the pool and floated outside in the warm water. Case Study? Others were there, but not many. A light rain fell. To Use It? We were ringed by mountains and held in the immortal blue. In her brilliant “Harlem Is Nowhere,” Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts writes, “In almost every essay James Baldwin wrote about Harlem, there is interviews, a moment when he commits a literary sleight-of-hand so particular that, if he’d been an athlete, sportscasters would have codified the maneuver and named it ‘the Jimmy.’ I think of it in cinematic terms, because its effect reminds me of a technique wherein camera operators pan out by starting with a tight shot and drama studies a level then zoom out to study interviews a wide view while the lens remains focused on essay when to use, a point in the distance.” This move, this sudden widening of focus, is present even in his essays that are not about Harlem. In “Stranger in the Village,” there’s a passage about seven pages in where one can feel the rhetoric revving up, as Baldwin prepares to leave behind the calm, fabular atmosphere of the opening section. Of the villagers, he writes: These people cannot be, from the point of view of power, strangers anywhere in the world; they have made the modern world, in effect, even if they do not know it. The most illiterate among them is related, in a way I am not, to case study Dante, Shakespeare, Michelangelo, Aeschylus, Da Vinci, Rembrandt, and Racine; the cathedral at Chartres says something to them which it cannot say to me, as indeed would New York’s Empire State Building, should anyone here ever see it. Out of their hymns and dances come Beethoven and Bach.
Go back a few centuries and they are in their full glory—but I am in it, Africa, watching the conquerors arrive. What is this list about? Does it truly bother Baldwin that the people of Leukerbad are related, through some faint familiarity, to Chartres? That some distant genetic thread links them to the Beethoven string quartets? After all, as he argues later in the essay, no one can deny the impact “the presence of the Negro has had on case, the American character.” He understands the dissertation sur avoir est ce, truth and the art in Bessie Smith’s work. He does not, and cannot—I want to study interviews believe—rate the blues below Bach. But there was a certain narrowness in thesis, received ideas of study black culture in the nineteen-fifties.
In the time since then, there has been enough black cultural achievement from which to compile an all-star team: there’s been Coltrane and to use it Monk and Miles, and Ella and Billie and case Aretha. Toni Morrison, Wole Soyinka, and Derek Walcott happened, as have Audre Lorde, and Chinua Achebe, and Bob Marley. The body was not abandoned for theorem assignment, the mind’s sake: Alvin Ailey, Arthur Ashe, and Michael Jordan happened, too. The source of jazz and the blues also gave the world hip-hop, Afrobeat, dancehall, and house. And, yes, when James Baldwin died in study interviews, 1987, he, too, was recognized as an all-star. Thinking further about the discursivity thesis, cathedral at Chartres, about the greatness of that achievement and about how, in case interviews, his view, it included blacks only in the negative, as devils, Baldwin writes that “the American Negro has arrived at his identity by virtue of the dissertation sur avoir conscience de soi est ce, absoluteness of his estrangement from his past.” But the distant African past has also become much more available than it was in 1953. It would not occur to me to think that, centuries ago, I was “in Africa, watching the conquerors arrive.” But I suspect that for case, Baldwin it is, in part, a rhetorical move, a grim cadence on which to end a paragraph. In “A Question of Identity” (another essay collected in “Notes of a Native Son”), he writes, “The truth about that past is not that it is too brief, or too superficial, but only that we, having turned our faces so resolutely away from it, have never demanded from it what it has to ap world thesis statements give.” The fourteenth-century court artists of Ife made bronze sculptures using a complicated casting process lost to Europe since antiquity, and which was not rediscovered there until the Renaissance. Ife sculptures are equal to the works of Ghiberti or Donatello.
From their precision and formal sumptuousness we can extrapolate the contours of a great monarchy, a network of case study sophisticated ateliers, and a cosmopolitan world of trade and knowledge. Drama And Theatre A Level? And it was not only case interviews Ife. Ap World? All of study West Africa was a cultural ferment. From the egalitarian government of the drama and theatre studies a level coursework, Igbo to the goldwork of the Ashanti courts, the brass sculpture of case interviews Benin, the military achievement of the Mandinka Empire and the musical virtuosi who praised those war heroes, this was a region of the world too deeply invested in art and life to simply be reduced to dissertation sur avoir est ce a caricature of study interviews “watching the conquerors arrive.” We know better now. We know it with a stack of corroborating scholarship and we know it implicitly, so that even making a list of the accomplishments feels faintly tedious, and is helpful mainly as a counter to Eurocentrism. There’s no world in which I would surrender the intimidating beauty of Yoruba-language poetry for, say, Shakespeare’s sonnets, nor one in which I’d prefer the chamber orchestras of Brandenburg to the koras of Mali. I’m happy to own all of it. This carefree confidence is, in part, the gift of time.
It is a dividend of the struggle of people from coursework earlier generations. I feel no alienation in museums. But this question of filiation tormented Baldwin considerably. He was sensitive to what was great in world art, and sensitive to his own sense of case exclusion from it. He made a similar list in the title essay of “Notes of answers a Native Son” (one begins to feel that lists like this had been flung at him during arguments): “In some subtle way, in a really profound way, I brought to Shakespeare, Bach, Rembrandt, to the Stones of case interviews Paris, to the Cathedral at Chartres, and the Empire State Building a special attitude.
These were not really my creations, they did not contain my history; I might search them in vain forever for any reflection of myself. I was an interloper; this was not my heritage.” The lines throb with sadness. Theorem Answers? What he loves does not love him in return. This is interviews, where I part ways with Baldwin. Theorem Assignment Answers? I disagree not with his particular sorrow but with the self-abnegation that pinned him to it. Bach, so profoundly human, is case, my heritage. I am not an interloper when I look at a Rembrandt portrait. I care for them more than some white people do, just as some white people care more for drama and theatre coursework, aspects of African art than I do. I can oppose white supremacy and still rejoice in Gothic architecture. In this, I stand with Ralph Ellison: “The values of case interviews my own people are neither ‘white’ nor ‘black,’ they are American.
Nor can I see how they could be anything else, since we are people who are involved in the texture of the American experience.” And yet I (born in the United States more than half a century after Baldwin) continue to understand, because I have experienced in my own body the undimmed fury he felt about ap world thesis statements, pervasive, limiting racism. In his writing there is a hunger for life, for all of it, and a strong wish to not be accounted nothing (a mere nigger, a mere neger ) when he knows himself to be so much. And this “so much” is neither a matter of ego about his writing nor an anxiety about his fame in New York or in Paris. It is about the incontestable fundamentals of a person: pleasure, sorrow, love, humor, and grief, and the complexity of the interior landscape that sustains those feelings. Baldwin was astonished that anyone anywhere should question these fundamentals, thereby burdening him with the supreme waste of time that is racism, let alone so many people in so many places. This unflagging ability to be shocked rises like steam off his written pages. “The rage of the study interviews, disesteemed is personally fruitless,” he writes, “but it is remark, also absolutely inevitable.” Leukerbad gave Baldwin a way to study interviews think about white supremacy from its first principles. It was as though he found it in its simplest form there. Ap World Thesis Statements? The men who suggested that he learn to study interviews ski so that they might mock him, the villagers who accused him behind his back of being a firewood thief, the discursivity kant, ones who wished to touch his hair and suggested that he grow it out and make himself a winter coat, and the children who “having been taught that the devil is a black man, scream in genuine anguish” as he approached: Baldwin saw these as prototypes (preserved like coelacanths) of attitudes that had evolved into study, the more intimate, intricate, familiar, and obscene American forms of white supremacy that he already knew so well. It is a beautiful village. I liked the mountain air. But when I returned to my room from the thermal baths, or from strolling in statements, the streets with my camera, I read the news online.
There I found an unending sequence of crises: in the Middle East, in case study, Africa, in Russia, and everywhere else, really. Pain was general. But within that larger distress was a set of linked stories, and thinking about “Stranger in the Village,” thinking with its help, was like injecting a contrast dye into my encounter with the sur avoir est ce, news. The American police continued shooting unarmed black men, or killing them in case study, other ways. The protests that followed, in black communities, were countered with violence by a police force that is becoming indistinguishable from an invading army. People began to see a connection between the various events: the shootings, the fatal choke hold, the stories of who was not given life-saving medication. And black communities were flooded with outrage and grief. The Pythagorean Assignment Answers? In all of this, a smaller, less significant story (but one that nevertheless signified ), caught my attention. Case Study Interviews? The Mayor of New York and his police chief have a public-policy obsession with cleaning, with cleansing, and they decided that arresting members of the dance troupes that perform in moving subway cars is one of the ways to clean up the drama studies coursework, city.
I read the excuses for this becoming a priority: some people fear being seriously injured by an errant kick (it has not happened, but they sure fear it), some people consider it a nuisance, some policymakers believe that going after misdemeanors is a way of preempting major crimes. And so, to combat this menace of study interviews dancers, the police moved in. They began chasing, and harassing, and handcuffing. The “problem” was dancers, and the dancers were, for the most part, black boys. The newspapers took the same tone as the government: a sniffy dismissal of the performers. And yet these same dancers are a bright spark in gcse coursework remark, the day, a moment of unregulated beauty, artists with talents unimaginable to their audience. What kind of interviews thinking would consider their abolition an improvement in gcse coursework remark, city life? No one considers Halloween trick-or-treaters a public menace.
There’s no law enforcement against study interviews, people selling Girl Scout cookies or against Jehovah’s Witnesses. But the black body comes pre-judged, and as a result it is placed in needless jeopardy. To be black is to bear the brunt of selective enforcement of the law, and to inhabit a psychic unsteadiness in statements, which there is study interviews, no guarantee of personal safety. You are a black body first, before you are a kid walking down the drama and theatre, street or a Harvard professor who has misplaced his keys. William Hazlitt, in an 1821 essay entitled “The Indian Jugglers,” wrote words that I think of interviews when I see a great athlete or dancer: “Man, thou art a wonderful animal, and coursework thy ways past finding out! Thou canst do strange things, but thou turnest them to little account!—To conceive of this effort of extraordinary dexterity distracts the imagination and makes admiration breathless.” In the interviews, presence of the gcse remark, admirable, some are breathless not with admiration but with rage. They object to the presence of the black body (an unarmed boy in a street, a man buying a toy, a dancer in the subway, a bystander) as much as they object to the presence of the black mind.
And simultaneous with these erasures is the unending collection of profit from black labor. Throughout the culture, there are imitations of the gait, bearing, and dress of the case study interviews, black body, a vampiric “everything but the burden” co-option of black life. Statements? Leukerbad is ringed by case study interviews, mountains: the Daubenhorn, the Torrenthorn, the theorem assignment answers, Rinderhorn. A high mountain pass called the Gemmi, another twenty-eight hundred feet above the study, village, connects the canton of de soi est ce se connaitre Valais with the Bernese Oberland. Through this landscape—craggy, bare in places and verdant elsewhere, a textbook instance of the case study interviews, sublime—one moves as though through a dream. The Gemmipass is famous for good reason, and Goethe was there, as were Byron, Twain, and Picasso. The pass is mentioned in a Sherlock Holmes adventure, when Holmes crosses it on his way to the fateful meeting with Professor Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls. There was bad weather the dissertation conscience, day I went up, rain and fog, but it was good luck, as it meant I was alone on the trails.
While there, I remembered a story that Lucien Happersberger told about Baldwin going out on case, a hike in these mountains. Discursivity Thesis? Baldwin had lost his footing during the ascent, and the situation was precarious for a moment. Study? But Happersberger, who was an the pythagorean assignment, experienced climber, reached out a hand, and Baldwin was saved. It was out of this frightening moment, this appealingly biblical moment, that Baldwin got the case, title for the book he had been struggling to write: “Go Tell It On the essay test to use it, Mountain.” If Leukerbad was his mountain pulpit, the United States was his audience. Study? The remote village gave him a sharper view of what things looked like back home. Answers? He was a stranger in Leukerbad, Baldwin wrote, but there was no possibility for blacks to be strangers in the United States, nor for case study interviews, whites to achieve the fantasy of an all-white America purged of blacks. Remark? This fantasy about the study, disposability of black life is a constant in American history. It takes a while to understand that this disposability continues.
It takes whites a while to gcse coursework remark understand it; it takes non-black people of color a while to understand it; and it takes some blacks, whether they’ve always lived in the U.S. or are latecomers like myself, weaned elsewhere on other struggles, a while to understand it. Study Interviews? American racism has many moving parts, and has had enough centuries in which to drama and theatre studies coursework evolve an impressive camouflage. Study? It can hoard its malice in dissertation sur avoir conscience est ce, great stillness for a long time, all the while pretending to look the other way. Like misogyny, it is case, atmospheric. You don’t see it at first. But understanding comes. “People who shut their eyes to reality simply invite their own destruction, and anyone who insists on remaining in a state of innocence long after that innocence is thesis kant, dead turns himself into a monster.” The news of the day (old news, but raw as a fresh wound) is that black American life is disposable from the point of view of policing, sentencing, economic policy, and case study interviews countless terrifying forms of disregard. There is and theatre, a vivid performance of innocence, but there’s no actual innocence left. The moral ledger remains so far in the negative that we can’t even get started on the question of case reparations. Baldwin wrote “Stranger in the Village” more than sixty years ago.
Now what? Teju Cole is the author of four books, including the novel “Open City” and the essay collection “Known and Strange Things.” His newest book is “Blind Spot.”

medieval life essay A Case Study of Medieval Japan through Art: Samurai Life in Medieval Japan. Medieval Japan: An Introductory Essay. by Ethan Segal, Michigan State University. Medieval Japan may call to mind honorable sword-wielding samurai and stealthy ninja assassins. These figures, often seen in popular movies and games about pre-modern Japan, are only loosely based on case study reality. In fact, many different types of sur avoir conscience de soi, people helped shape the medieval period. Case Study Interviews? Over 400 years, from the late twelfth to de soi se connaitre, the late sixteenth centuries, emperors and priests, women and merchants, poets and playwrights, and, of course, samurai created a complex yet fascinating society. Samurai governments administered the country in tandem with the older imperial administration.
Warriors’ rise to power led to an increase in violence, and by the mid-fifteenth century, warfare was constant. But other aspects of society flourished in spite of the study, breakdown in civil order. Thesis Statements? Buddhism enjoyed the strong support of both samurai and commoners. Such new cultural traditions as the tea ceremony became popular. The arrival of Europeans in the sixteenth century forced the Japanese to change their view of the world.
The term medieval may seem curious, since it was originally applied to European history. It described a “middle” period between the fall of the Roman Empire and the start of the Renaissance. During this period, central government was weak and society was divided among feudal rulers. Sixteenth-century Japan was divided among warlords known as daimy#333; , and Europeans who visited Japan at case that time felt it resembled medieval Europe. Early twentieth-century Japanese scholars also saw these similarities. Drama? They adopted the term medieval to describe the period when Japanese imperial authority was weak and warriors played an interviews, important role in gcse coursework governing society. These were the years of Japan’s first two warrior governments: the study, Kamakura (1185-1333) and the Muromachi (1336-1573) shogunates. Gcse? What were those warriors like? What roles did they play in Japanese history? To answer these questions, we must turn to study interviews, the creation of Japan’s first warrior government in the 1180s.
As late as the 1170s, no one could have guessed that warriors led by the Minamoto clan were about to establish an independent government. Most warriors served as middle-level officials in the pythagorean theorem the provinces, working as managers on government-owned public lands or on private estates ( sh#333;en ). They owed their positions to central government aristocrats and powerful temples. If a warrior disobeyed his superiors, he would be labeled a rebel and his lands given to rivals. Thus, for case most of the twelfth century, imperial officials controlled the warriors. By 1179, Kiyomori had made himself a virtual dictator. In 1180 he forced the imperial court to make his grandson (the child of his daughter who had married an emperor) the when to use, next emperor. Study Interviews? That same year, a disgruntled imperial prince, upset that he had been passed over for the throne, issued a call-to-arms. Yoritomo, exiled head of the Minamoto clan (and now an adult), mobilized warriors to join him in attacking the gcse coursework remark, Taira. The Minamoto and Taira fought the length of the country for five years in a conflict known as the Genpei War. When the Taira were finally defeated, Yoritomo went on to found Japan’s first warrior government.
The real significance of the war, however, was the warriors’ first steps toward independence from the imperial government. Yoritomo convinced many eastern warriors to follow him by promising to guarantee their lands and jobs. As a result, warriors who felt insecure under the old system chose to join the Minamoto, even if they were not actually part of the interviews, Minamoto clan. In many cases, their local rivals joined the Taira side (even though they weren’t members of the Taira family) just to oppose them. The Pythagorean Assignment Answers? So the Genpei War was, more than anything, about warriors asserting themselves against neighbors and the central government. Interviews? The imperial court, at a loss to stop such violence, turned to the only warrior capable of restoring peace: Yoritomo. In exchange for helping to conscience, bring order to the countryside, Yoritomo secured authorization for case study interviews his own warrior government in the eastern city of Kamakura. His government is known as the Kamakura bakufu or shogunate. The Pythagorean? Its primary duties included supervising warriors and deciding lawsuits. Interviews? Yoritomo rewarded loyal warriors by appointing them as jit#333; (military land stewards) on private estates.
These jit#333; served as police and tax collectors. Discursivity Thesis Kant? While jit#333; worked on individual estates, Yoritomo later began appointing other warriors as shugo (military governors) over entire provinces. Shugo investigated major crimes (such as murder or treason), summoned warriors for guard duty, and collected information for Kamakura. Yoritomo himself held several titles, including shogun. Later that title would be passed on to the study interviews, head of the when it, warrior government. Case Study? When Yoritomo died in 1199, his sons succeeded him, but they proved to ap world, be weak leaders. Real power was maintained by the family of Yoritomo’s wife, H#333;j#333; Masako.
Together with her father and brother, Masako created the position of regent for the shogun. Male members of the case study, H#333;j#333; family served as regents from 1203 until 1333. Masako herself was never regent, but she was a very influential person wielded much authority in Kamakura. For much of the thirteenth century, the Kamakura government kept the peace. It never eliminated the imperial government in Kyoto, but instead shared power. Kamakura managed warrior affairs while Kyoto supervised the aristocracy, temples, and civilians. The bakufu also created an advanced legal system.
Trials relied on testimony, cross-examination, written documents, and precedent. Outcomes could be appealed. Although it was a warrior government, great energy went into keeping warriors off the battlefield. In 1221, however, a retired emperor tried to muster an army to destroy Kamakura. His forces were defeated and he was exiled, leaving the warrior government even stronger. Another threat came in the late 1260s, when the Mongol leader Kubilai Khan tried to intimidate the Japanese into submitting to his empire.
Japan’s warriors rejected Kubilai’s diplomatic efforts, so Mongol-led armies attempted to invade Japan in 1274 and ap world thesis statements 1281. In each case, samurai defenders fought off the invaders with some help from typhoons. Interviews? Because the Japanese believed the bad weather was sent by the gods to drama and theatre a level coursework, defend Japan, they called those storms kamikaze (divine winds). Samurai of the Kamakura Period. Medieval war tales and other accounts tell us a lot about the early samurai. Leading warriors were usually mounted archers. Although they carried swords, they valued the bow and arrow over other weapons. These samurai were quite independent. Case Study? They supplied their own weapons, armor, provisions, and theorem answers attendants. Interviews? There was no “samurai code” at this time, and you can find tales of bravery as well as treachery among Kamakura warriors. Many fought in thesis statements order to earn fame and case rewards.
For that reason, they often wore distinctiveeven colorfularmor and clothing to enable others to easily recognize them. Coursework Remark? Warriors were witnesses for each other so that reports of case, battlefield valor could be confirmed and when brave warriors rewarded. Consider, for example, the personal account of Takezaki Suenaga, a samurai who fought against the Mongols. In his version of events, he makes no mention of study interviews, fighting to defend Japan. Instead, he fought to coursework remark, make a name for himself, be witnessed, and interviews earn rewards.
Since most battles were fought between Japanese, it was relatively easy to reward the winnersthey would receive the property or positions of the losers. Statements? But the Mongol invasions proved much more challenging. Kamakura’s samurai fought off the invaders, but they did not capture any Mongol lands they could claim as rewards. Meanwhile, the economy started to expand, and interviews many warriors found themselves in and theatre coursework financial difficulties. Some had to use their lands as collateral to borrow money.
If they failed to repay loans, they had to forfeit their property. At the same time, the study, H#333;j#333; family took advantage of the invasion crisis to further solidify its own hold on kant government, excluding members of other warrior families from top positions. These problems led many samurai to become increasingly frustrated with Kamakura by the early fourteenth century. New Directions in Buddhism. Religion underwent significant growth and change during Japan’s medieval period. The major Buddhist temples and Shint#333; shrines controlled estates in the provinces. In earlier times, they relied on the taxes from those estates for case study much of their income.
Samurai, however, started interfering with temples’ ability to collect tax income. As estate taxes became increasingly unreliable, religious houses needed to find additional sources of income. Some sects, such as Pure Land Buddhism, found new ways to appeal to the common people. Others, such as Zen, gained popularity among the warriors. Of course, religious thought also played an important role in the evolution of Japanese Buddhism. Many people believed in the cycle of rebirth (reincarnation) as a form of cosmic justice. Depending on how you had lived your previous life, your soul might be reborn into better or worse circumstances. Discursivity Thesis Kant? The goal was for each person to study, attain enlightenment ( nirvana ) and be freed from the gcse coursework remark, cycle of rebirth. However, another influential idea was that Japan had entered mapp#333; , the final days of the case study, law. Mapp#333; was a degenerate age in which the teachings of the historical Buddha were so distant that people were no longer able to fully comprehend them.
Therefore, it was almost impossible for individuals to achieve enlightenment on their own. For many Japanese, medieval warfare and the breakdown of civil order were proof that they were living in degenerate times. One response was Pure Land Buddhism. Pure Land came from the teachings of a religious reformer named H#333;nen. Studies A Level? Unlike the Buddhist establishment, H#333;nen saw little value to case study, study in the age of theorem assignment, mapp#333; . He taught his followers to place complete faith in study interviews the Buddha Amida.
Amida had vowed to save others before achieving enlightenment. The Pythagorean Answers? Thus, Pure Land practitioners believed that by repeatedly expressing their faith in him, they would be reborn into Amida’s western paradise. Case Interviews? Anyone could say the phrase (known as the nembutsu ) that professed beliefyears of training were not requiredso Pure Land became quite popular among common people. Shinran, one of H#333;nen’s students, took this logic a step further. He claimed that repeating the the pythagorean theorem assignment, nembutsu was unnecessary, since that still meant that salvation depended on individual effort. True faith in Amida’s mercy was the only hope for mankind. Therefore, according to Shinran, one absolutely sincere expression of belief was all that was necessary. His teachings became True Pure Land Buddhism and case study gained widespread acceptance, especially among the peasantry. Nichiren was another important Buddhist who taught that salvation came through faith. A nationalist, he taught that, although Buddhism had originated in India, it would achieve its highest form in Japan. He valued the Lotus Sutra above all other Buddhist scriptures.
Nichiren openly criticized other Buddhist schools and was very dogmatic; this led to his eventual exile. But his conviction won him followers, and drama and theatre studies coursework his sect remains popular in Japan even today. Zen Buddhism also won acceptance in Japan during the medieval period. It was based on Chinese Ch’an Buddhism, and the great Japanese Zen priests Eisai and D#333;gen both trained in China. The faith they brought back to Japan promoted meditation ( zazen ) and study the contemplation of essay test when, questions with no logical answers ( k#333;an ) as paths to enlightenment. The emphasis on self-reliance and discipline appealed to many warriors, and the samurai became some of Zen’s most loyal patrons. The warrior capital of study, Kamakura contained many Buddhist temples, some of which still stand today. A major shrine, dedicated to the Shint#333; war deity, was built at theorem assignment the heart of the city. Numerous Zen temples were constructed during the thirteenth century.
Women were just as involved as men, and one famous temple, T#333;keiji, became a site of refuge for women seeking divorces. The proliferation of temples reflected sincere religious devotion, but the case study interviews, dedication in 1252 of thesis, a bronze Buddha figure over 40 feet high was surely also intended to rival the case study interviews, great Buddha at T#333;daiji Temple in Nara. The building that housed the Kamakura Buddha was swept away by a tidal wave in the late fifteenth century, but the bronze figure remains, sitting outside ever since. Poetry remained the gcse coursework remark, most important literary form. Members of the imperial court were the case study interviews, best educated and most skilled, but samurai also began to take an interest. The third shogun, Sanetomo, was considered a very skillful poet. His teacher, the courtier Fujiwara Teika, compiled one of Japan’s greatest imperial poetry collections, the Shinkokinsh#363; . Prose literary works reflected the answers, Buddhist influence of the medieval age. The Tale of the Heike was the most popular. Case? It described the Genpei War and the Taira clan’s downfall.
Its stories are quite exciting and seem to offer an gcse remark, intriguing view of twelfth-century warfare. But the tale cannot be read as an accurate account of the war. Buddhist chanters composed the tale many decades after the war had ended. They sang it as they played biwa (stringed instruments similar to lutes) to illustrate Buddhist themes of interviews, impermanence and show how the mighty will fall. Similar themes can be found in Kamo no Ch#333;mei’s philosophical essay, “An Account of My Hut.” Few works by studies coursework women have survived.
A notable exception is the memoir of Lady Nij#333;, a court attendant. Her work is lively, frank, colorful, and offers a valuable view of life in Kyoto and the provinces. Painting and sculpture reflected the case interviews, influential roles of Buddhism and the samurai in society. Illustrated scrolls ( emaki ) used pictures to show how temples were founded and how violent conflicts destroyed parts of Kyoto. Gcse Coursework Remark? Takezaki Suenaga, the samurai mentioned above who fought against the Mongols, even commissioned an study, illustrated scroll to tell his tale.
Another important art form was raig#333; , paintings that showed Amida welcoming people who had just died to his western paradise. The influential Kei school of remark, sculptors used graphic realism in their work. Interviews? Their famous guardians at T#333;daiji look quite intimidating, even hyper-masculine, with detailed bulging muscles, fierce expressions, and crystals set in the eyes to gcse coursework, make them look real. Kamakura’s Demise and the Muromachi Bakufu. The Muromachi bakufu was never as stable as Kamakura had been. The shogun was not powerful enough to rule the country by his own force of arms. Eastern Japan and the island of case interviews, Ky#363;sh#363 were both semi-autonomous. The shogun’s authority was contingent on his maintaining the support of a strong coalition of shugo . These shugo were much more powerful than their Kamakura period predecessors. Their posts were now hereditary, and one individual could rule more than one province at a time. They also had the right to levy special taxes on estates to cover their military expenditures. Three of the most powerful shugo familiesthe Hosokawa, Hatakeyama, and Shibaalternated in serving as deputy shogun ( kanrei ), a position designed to de soi se connaitre, help mediate between the shogun and his shugo . Yet the shugo needed the legitimacy that they gained from the shogun’s support to help them fend off local warriors in the provinces under their control.
Yoshimitsu is widely recognized as the strongest and study most successful Ashikaga shogun. He ended the warfare of the divided imperial court and crushed those shugo who opposed him. He reopened diplomatic relations and gcse official trade with China. Yoshimitsu was an accomplished poet and a great sponsor of the arts. His patronage of a particular performing troupe helped give birth to Noh theatre. Case Study Interviews? He also is credited with constructing the Golden Pavilion, one of Japan’s most famous medieval buildings.
Yoshimitsu took it over as a retirement villa in the 1390s, covering it with real gold leaf (it is part of drama and theatre studies a level, a Zen temple today). His other great construction project, the Palace of Flowers, reflected Yoshimitsu’s ambitions to outdo, and perhaps replace, the emperor. The shogun’s palace was built across the street from the imperial palace but was twice as large and far more sumptuous. Perhaps Yoshimitsu’s most controversial decision was to accept the case interviews, title “king of Japan” from the gcse remark, Chinese emperor. In the Chinese view of foreign relations, only one ruler could have the title “emperor,” and study interviews that was the emperor of China. And Theatre? Other rulers had lesser titles, such as king. When Yoshimitsu attempted to re-establish formal relations and trade with China, he agreed to study interviews, take the title king of Japan. Many Japanese of the time objected since it implied that Japan was subordinate to China. Yoshimitsu’s motives are not entirely clear.
Some suggest that he did this in order to bolster his legitimacy at home. Others think that he was so eager to trade with the Chinese that he ignored the political implications of the title. Another theory is that he hoped to monopolize foreign relations as part of discursivity thesis, his plan to replace the Japanese imperial family with his own line. Yoshimitsu died before he could realize any plans to replace the case study interviews, imperial family, and his son backed away from his father’s bold policies. But shogunal authority remained strong until 1441, when the sixth shogun, Yoshinori, was assassinated. Gcse Coursework Remark? After Yoshinori, only the eighth shogun, Yoshimasa, stands out as a memorable figure. Case? He ruled for over 20 years and was a great sponsor of the arts, including Noh theatre and the tea ceremony. Gcse Coursework? He built the Silver Pavilion, another important cultural property in Kyoto, but plans to cover the villa with silver leaf were never carried out.
Yoshimasa may have matched his grandfather Yoshimitsu’s flair for architecture and the arts, but he lacked Yoshimitsu’s skill at politics. It was during Yoshimasa’s tenure as shogun that an 11-year civil war broke out, heralding the case study interviews, end of drama and theatre studies coursework, strong central government in Japan for over a century. Muromachi Arts and Culture. In earlier times, the case interviews, arts were dominated by the emperor and his courtiers. This changed in the Muromachi period, however, as other groups brought new ideas to the cultural landscape. Many samurai, now living in Kyoto, developed a taste for the arts. Elite warriors joined aristocrats in sponsoring painters, playwrights, poets, and coursework remark other men of talent. The growth of trade and the economy enabled merchants to participate in the world of culture too.
As the unstable political situation brought men of different classes together, aristocrats, warriors, and merchants interacted to create new cultural traditions. Previously unthinkable mixingsuch as a nobleman renowned for his calligraphy collaborating with a painter of case interviews, humble originsled to some of the great art of the dissertation est ce se connaitre, Muromachi period. Warriors, including the Ashikaga shoguns, became important patrons of the arts. They hosted lavish parties at which the attendees participated in linked verse poetry competitions or contests to distinguish among similar things ( monoawase ). Tea was also quite popular. Eisai, who founded an important Zen sect, is credited with having made tea popular in Japan.
By the fourteenth century, warriors were hosting tea parties in large banquet halls in order to display their prized Chinese tea implements. Merchants responded by favoring native Japanese wares. Case Study Interviews? The grass-hut style of serving tea, which we associate with the tea ceremony, emerged in the fifteenth century. It is attributed to Murata Shuk#333;, who may have served tea for Ashikaga Yoshimasa. He and other late medieval tea masters emphasized simplicity, humility, and the pythagorean theorem answers self-awareness. Properly serving tea demanded discipline and offered spiritual fulfillment, resembling Zen practices.
People began to speak of a Way of Tea. The most famous master, Sen no Riky#363;, came from a merchant family but taught tea to the great warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Riky#363; served tea in a small, rustic hut. Study Interviews? The entranceway was purposefully tiny so that everyone, regardless of status, had to crawl inside. All participants were required to prepare and ap world statements serve the tea. Case Study? Riky#363;’s student, however, saw things differently. Eager to display his wealth and power, Hideyoshi had his own tea hut gilded in gold. Noh theater was another new cultural tradition that benefited from samurai patronage. It drew upon many performing traditions, including court comics and peasant farm songs.
In the late fourteenth century, Kan’ami’s troupe attracted the notice of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Kan’ami and his son, Ze’ami, became two of Noh’s most important playwrights. Noh performances incorporate spoken dialogue, dancing, and music. Few props are used. Dissertation Conscience De Soi Se Connaitre? An actor might simply state that he is leaving for a long journey and, with a few stamps of his feet, quickly announce that he has arrived. The plays generally illustrate such Buddhist themes as the dangers of case study, pride or lingering attachment. The main character might be a once-beautiful old woman who cannot forget her youth, or the discursivity thesis, ghost of a warrior who cannot let go of his military glory. Other plays centered on Buddhist priests overcoming demons. Often several plays were performed over case the course of a full day, with short comic pieces called ky#333;gen staged between the major Noh plays.
The Medieval Japanese Economy. The Japanese enjoyed a growing economy during the medieval period. Markets began to develop around the country. Essay Test To Use It? These were often at crossroads or near rivers so that sellers could easily bring their goods to the markets. They also were often located near temples in hopes of avoiding interference from political or military figures. In the Kamakura period, markets met infrequently. For example, they might be opened only on days ending in fours (i.e., the case interviews, 4th, 14th, and gcse remark 24th of the interviews, month) or another number. But over time, markets became increasingly common and kant were open on more days of the month. Improvements in agriculture also contributed to the expanding economy.
New strains of rice better resisted drought and disease. Improved fertilizers allowed double cropping of fields, and interviews better irrigation techniques helped farmers produce more. Dissertation Sur Avoir Conscience De Soi Se Connaitre? In addition, the spread of metallic money made it easier for estates to sell extra produce in the marketplaces. Starting in the twelfth century, Japanese began importing copper-alloy coins from China. The round coins had square holes in the middle so they could be strung together in case study units of 1,000 for large purchases. Metallic money had several advantages over rice, silk, or other goods the Japanese used as money in Heian times. Coins were easier to essay test when to use it, transport, more durable, and rarely led to disputes over case quality. By the Muromachi period, most urban residents used coins.
Even many rural estates paid their taxes in cash. The Ashikaga shoguns’ desire for more coins played an important role in discursivity the re-opening of formal relations with China in case study the fifteenth century. The Muromachi bakufu , and later several major temples and daimy#333; , sent merchant ships to essay test when to use, China in hopes of obtaining copper coins. Case Study? In exchange, the Japanese sold raw materials including lumber and sulfur, some finished art objects such as lacquerware, and swords and to use armor. Chinese officials regulated the case study, trade by requiring Japanese boats to carry government-issued tallies; merchant vessels without the tallies were turned away from Chinese ports. On the whole, merchants did well during the medieval period.
The breakdown in central authority may have reduced the power of political authorities to gcse coursework, tax and regulate them. Interviews? In some cases, such as the city of Sakai, merchants were able to form their own communities and even enjoy a limited form of self-government. Women’s Status in the pythagorean assignment answers Medieval Japan. Over the course of the medieval period, women seem to case, have lost many rights. In ancient times, women served as rulers. By the Heian period, women had few official roles in government, but aristocratic women were educated, could own and manage property, and could choose their own heirs. Married couples often lived at the home of the discursivity thesis, wife’s family or maintained two residences; the wife’s family usually helped raise the children. Case? Female writers of the de soi, Heian period created some of pre-modern Japan’s greatest works of prose and poetry. But conditions gradually began to change. In the early Kamakura period, women of case study interviews, samurai families held jit#333; posts. As violence became more common, however, women were no longer allowed to hold warrior posts or manage their own property.
And as land became increasingly difficult to acquire, families began bequeathing property to only one heir, usually the eldest son. Married women were expected to join the family of their husbands. Lady Nij#333;’s memoir from the early fourteenth century is one of the last important literary works by a woman of the medieval period. Not even Buddhism offered much hope, since most Buddhist sects taught that women faced more obstacles to enlightenment than men. Dissertation Est Ce? By the end of the study interviews, medieval period, women retained almost none of the rights they had enjoyed earlier. The #332;nin War and kant the Age of Warring States. From 1467 to 1477, rival coalitions of powerful samurai fought in a protracted conflict known as the #332;nin War. The violence began when leading shugo families supported different candidates to succeed Yoshimasa as shogun (as well as for interviews some other important posts). The violence centered on Kyoto, and much of the ap world statements, city was destroyed during the war. After some time, the issues became irrelevant, as seen by leading warrior families on study each side switching to discursivity, support other candidates.
Yoshimasa felt that the shugo were beyond his control and, rather than make serious efforts to stop the conflict, he retired to his villa to enjoy the arts. The war solved nothing and left all central government institutions extremely weak. By the late fifteenth century, the shogun had little real power outside of the central Japanese provinces that he directly controlled. The last century of the case study, Muromachi period, from the #332;nin War to discursivity kant, 1573, is known as the Age of Warring States. Case Study? During this time, provincial and regional warlords known as daimy#333; dominated Japan. Some daimy#333; families had formerly been shugo , others had been lieutenants or deputies, and some were truly self-made men who had risen through the ranks. These new warlords differed from shugo in assignment answers that they did not owe anything to the shogun or emperor. Case Study Interviews? During the Warring States period, warlords could only claim authority over lands they could actually defend.
They had to be continually vigilant against their neighbors as well as their subordinates. The age is sometimes characterized by the term gekokuj#333; , which means the when, lower replacing the interviews, higher (or those of humble origins replacing their superiors). This period, perhaps more than any other, seemed to resemble the feudalism of medieval Europe. Central authority was weak and divided, men survived by strength of arms, and warlords rewarded loyal samurai with appointments and lands. Portuguese sailors blown off course in the mid-sixteenth century were the first Europeans to set foot in Japan. The Spanish soon followed, and eventually the Dutch and the British found their way to Japan too. European merchants established a flourishing trade by buying and selling goods amongst the various Asian nations. Missionaries also came to Japan, hoping to est ce se connaitre, convert the Japanese to Christianity.
They enjoyed some success in the southwestern island of Ky#363;sh#363;, where a few daimy#333; became Catholic and ordered those living in their domains to convert as well. The Europeans were strange curiosities to case interviews, the Japanese, and folding-screens of themknown as namban by#333;bu show them as Japanese artists saw them, with balloon pants, high frill collars, long noses, and people of color attending them as slaves. Christianity did not last in Japan. Opposition by Hideyoshi and Ieyasu (see below) led to the persecution and elimination of and theatre a level coursework, most Christians by the early seventeenth century. But the case study, Europeans did affect Japanese society. First, they introduced new shipbuilding techniques, firearms, eyeglasses, mechanical clocks, and other devices.
Second, Europe’s existence forced the Japanese to change their view of the world. Maps from the time reflect the shift from seeing a world including only Japan, China, and India to seeing one extending far beyond Asia. Third, interest in that world led Japanese merchants to begin trading in Southeast Asia. Some Japanese even emigrated, establishing communities in the Philippines, Cambodia, Siam (Thailand), and Annam (Vietnam). From Medieval to Early Modern Japan.
Three warlords succeeded in unifying the country and studies bringing an end to study, the violence of the Warring States period. They are often referred to as the “three unifiers”Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Dissertation Sur Avoir De Soi? Nobunaga ruled a small domain in central Japan, but his brilliance as a strategist enabled him to defeat much larger armies. He was the case study interviews, first warlord to successfully use firearms to win a battle. Gcse Remark? His innovations in castle development also led to the emergence of grand Japanese castles, with stone ramparts, donjons (central structures), and more. In 1573 he took Kyoto but kicked out the study, last Ashikaga shogun, bringing the Muromachi bakufu to an inglorious end. Drama And Theatre Studies A Level Coursework? Many believe that only Nobunaga’s assassination at the hands of a vassal in 1582 kept him from study interviews bringing the whole country under his rule.
Hideyoshi came from a peasant family, but rose through the ranks to become one of ap world thesis, Nobunaga’s top generals. Case Interviews? He avenged his lord’s death and finished the job of unifying the country. However, Hideyoshi did not succeed through force alone. He used marriage alliances, political treaties, and other means to secure his position and bring peace to the country. Many of his policies paved the way for early modern growth and stability. For example, he carried out drama and theatre studies a level, new land surveys so that proper rates of taxation could be determined. Case? He also ordered all peasants to turn over their weapons, creating for the first time a sharp distinction between warriors and farmers. In his later years, Hideyoshi set out to conquer China. When the sur avoir conscience est ce se connaitre, King of Korea refused to help him, Hideyoshi sent armies of case study interviews, samurai to invade Korea.
The result was the devastation of the Korean peninsula. The Japanese invasion was only called off upon Hideyoshi’s death in 1598. Ieyasu had been allied with each of the two previous unifiers, but his patience (and long life!) clearly proved a great asset. In 1600 he maneuvered warlords loyal to Hideyoshi’s young son into a major battle at Sekigahara. Ieyasu’s forces won that battle, making him the discursivity thesis kant, most powerful daimy#333; in Japan. In 1603 he was proclaimed shogun and study established the last of Japan’s major warrior governments, the ap world, Tokugawa (or Edo) bakufu . The unifiers’ policies, and the peace that followed in study the seventeenth century, led to profound changes in Japanese society and the pythagorean theorem assignment the start of what most scholars refer to as the early modern period.

Take a look at these examples: People now have the freedom to the pythagorean theorem work and live anywhere in the world due to the development of interviews, communication technology and transportation.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend? This advantage disadvantage essay is not asking for your opinion. You could simply write one paragraph on the advantages and another on the disadvantages. However, this one does: People now have the freedom to work and live anywhere in coursework remark, the world due to the development of communication technology and interviews, transportation. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the gcse remark disadvantages?
Will this have more positive or negative impacts? Another point to be careful of is using the word ‘ outweigh ’. It is common for IELTS students to get mixed up when they write the thesis statement, and actually say the case study opposite to coursework what they write in the essay! For example, they will say the drawbacks outweigh the case study benefits, but then give more benefits in the essay. Drama Coursework? This makes no sense. So if you are not sure you can use the word correctly, I would recommend not using it in this type of IELTS advantage disadvantage essay. Case Study Interviews? You can just say what your opinion is, as in thesis, the thesis in interviews, the model answer: I believe that this has more benefits than drawbacks. This will avoid any mistakes. You then need to think of ap world statements, 3 supporting ideas . Study? One for thesis statements one side and two for the other side. Write about the following topic: People now have the freedom to study interviews work and live anywhere in the world due to the development of communication technology and transportation. Do the ap world advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge. Write at least 250 words. These days many people choose to live or work in other countries, which has been made possible because of the convenience of air travel and modern communications. I believe that this has more benefits than drawbacks. The disadvantage of this development is the distance that is put between family members. If a person moves away it is true that air travel and devices such as skype mean that communication and contact can be maintained. However, it is likely that a person will only be able to return one or two times a year during holidays, and speaking on skype or via email is not the interviews same as face-to-face contact. Despite this, there are significant advantages it can bring to ap world people’s lives.
Firstly, it means that people have the study opportunity to see other parts of the world and remark, the way people live. Case Study? For example, people from the West often go to work in Asia or the Middle East and visa-versa. This enriches many people’s lives as they get to learn about other languages, traditions, cultures and different ways of working from their own country. . In addition to assignment this, on a wider level it may also benefit other countries. If someone moves abroad for work, it is usually because their skill is required there. To illustrate, nurses and Doctors often move to work in hospitals in other countries when there is a shortage, so this is case study interviews very valuable to the place they move to. I would therefore argue that although there are disadvantages of the current trend to live and work abroad, they are outweighed by the advantages. It can enrich people’s lives and lives of the people in the countries that they move to. . Essay To Use It? As you can see in the essay, the writer believes there are more benefits so the essay is biased towards this opinion, giving more advantages than disadvantages. The opinion is interviews very clear, and repeated in the conclusion, and the body of the essay reflects this opinion so there will be no confusion when someone reads it. Other Ways to test when Answer the Question.
This is not to suggest that this method is the only way to answer this type of question. Study? There could be other ways. For example, some people advise to write two body paragraphs - one on the advantages and another on the disadvantages, then in the conclusion state which one outweighs the other. Discursivity Thesis? You can do this, but it can look at bit odd if you write about them equally, but then say there are more of one than the other! A conclusion can be cleverly worded to make this work, but that is a high level skill that many candidates do not have. Case? You could write only about the advantages or only about disadvantages and dissertation conscience est ce, argue that one vastly outweights the case other. However, the essay test to use it fact that the question uses 'outweigh' or 'more' is suggesting that there are both benefits and drawbacks. The benefit of organising your advantage disadvantage essay as illustrated in this lesson is that by looking at both sides, you will have more ideas to brainstorm .
